چکیده

23.1 Abstract A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a closed-loop system with feedback as one important component. Dependent on the BCI application either to establish communication in patients with severe motor paralysis, to control neuroprosthesis, or to perform neurofeed-back, information is visually fed back to the user about success or failure of the intended act. One way to realize feedback is the use of virtual reality (VR). In this chapter, an overview is given of BCI-based control of VR. In addition, four examples are reported in

Combining BCI with Virtual Reality: Towards New Applications and Improved BCI

Historically, the main goal of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) research was, and still is, to design communication, control and motor substitution applications for patients with severe disabilities [75]. These last years have indeed seen tremendous advances in these areas with a number of groups having achieved BCI control of prosthetics, wheelchairs and spellers, among other [49]. More recently...

Brain-Computer Interfacing and Virtual Reality

Brain-computer interface (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) are natural companions. BCI provides a new interaction technique for controlling VR, and VR provides a rich feedback environment for BCI while retaining a controlled and safe environment. The combination of VR and BCI allows for providing participants with novel experiences that are impossible otherwise. Both fields still pose many technol...

Robotic and Virtual Reality BCIs Using Spatial Tactile and Auditory Oddball Paradigms

The paper reviews nine robotic and virtual reality (VR) brain-computer interface (BCI) projects developed by the author, in collaboration with his graduate students, within the BCI-lab research group during its association with University of Tsukuba, Japan. The nine novel approaches are discussed in applications to direct brain-robot and brain-virtual-reality-agent control interfaces using tact...

What Is Mixed Reality, Anyway? Considering the Boundaries of Mixed Reality in the Context of Robots

Mixed reality, as an approach in human-computer interaction, is often implicitly tied to particular implementation techniques (e.g., see-through device) and modalities (e.g., visual, graphical displays). In this paper we attempt to clarify the definition of mixed reality as a more abstract concept of combining the real and virtual worlds – that is, mixed reality is not a given technology but a ...

Effects of P300-Based BCI Use on Reported Presence in a Virtual Environment

Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are becoming more and more popular as an input device for virtual worlds and computer games. Depending on their function, a major drawback is the mental workload associated with their use and there is significant effort and training required to effectively control them. In this paper, we present two studies assessing how mental workload of a P300-based BCI affec...
